Karen Broomfield and her husband adopted their first dog together three weeks after they got married and they have not been without a dog since. In the intervening 22 years, she has been to many, many obedience classes and has progressed from choke chains and harsh leash corrections to all positive clicker training. She started learning about clicker training in an agility class with her first standard poodle; Karen and Stevie (the poodle) competed in a couple of trials before his sudden death at the age of 5.
Karen’s dog related interests include therapy dog work and AKC tracking training. Her (mostly) mini poodle Sophie was a therapy dog for a number of years, earning her CGC and her TDIA from Therapy Dogs International, meaning that she completed a minimum of 50 documented visits. Sophie went on to make between 75 and 100 visits before retiring recently due to her advancing age and hearing loss.
Currently, Karen is doing therapy visits with Finn, her black standard poodle. He has also earned his CGC from TDI, Inc. Karen and Finn train for tracking about once a week and hope to eventually earn their Tracking Dog title and then possibly more advanced tracking titles. She also plans to start him in agility training soon.
